I experienced this firsthand after returning from my recent trip to Miraval in Arizona. After enjoying afternoon temps of 70 degrees, I was totally caught off guard by the freezing cold in New York. The next day I woke up with lips so chapped they were on the verge of bleeding. Gross.

Whether it was the travel, the cold weather or the climate change, this was clear proof that icy wintery weather can do crazy things to us. And it doesn’t stop with the lips. Chipped nails, splitting cuticles, dry skin and static hair are all symptoms of the severe weather changes that affect us all.

Here are a few things you can do to combat chilling temperatures.

1. Swap your nail oil for something even richer. Dior Créme Apricot Fortifying Cream for the Nails should really be reserved for bedtime use only because it’s so strong. Created in 1963, Dior’s “cult-favorite magic multi-tasker” encourages nail growth, improves nail strength, and conditions cuticles.

2. Add a face oil into the mix. There’s a common misconception that in the winter, we should swap our night creams and moisturizers for an oil. This is only partly true. For serious and long lasting moisturize mix an oil like with your existing cream. This duo protects, hydrates and repairs at the same time. Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil is the B.O.M.B. A little goes a long way, so the bottle lasts forever, and it will never cause a breakout. It’s perfect for all skin types and I like it because it literally plumps my skin.

3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturizer and never leave home with your “everything” balm. You can never have enough balms, am I right? Now is the time to use them like crazy. These are my favorites (and yes, I need all three) for my handbag, my desk and my bedside table respectively: Glossier Balm Dotcom, All You Need Is Me by True Organic of Sweden and Pommade Divine by Nature’s Remedy Balm.

4. Coat your feet in a salve. There’s a reason Weleda Skin Food is in every makeup artist’s kit. You can use it everywhere—on your elbows, dry patches and all over your feet.

5. I had always been a fan of the old-school Chanel Hydramax, which is why I was delighted when they expanded the line to include this. The formula features the moisturizing powers of camellia alba, the antioxidant powers of blue ginger and the nutritive benefits of camellia oil to give your skin the necessary tools to strengthen while restoring its natural radiance, suppleness and beauty.

7.
